- I definitely agree with the authors point of view as far as the increase in marriages in the United States. More and more young marriages are happening & I think that it is happening too quick. Its like these young adults are not taking the time to think before they jump into these kind of decisions.
- Facts- Phillip stated facts, he used CNN and NBC as a reliable source. Most of the article was very opinionated but he still backed up his information with facts.
- Statistics- There are obviously statistics used in order to make this more believable. According o the poll in 2002 63% of people between the ages of 17 and 23 are getting married and then he stated that there was a 17% increase in the marriages in the U.S.
- Expert Testimony- There isn't any expert testimony
- Personal/Firsthand Observation- In the 2ND to last paragraph I believe Phillip uses some personal observation and thoughts on how he feels about this subject. he states that he has met a few girls that he thought he could marry because they are what he wanted but not what he needed forever.
- I think his statistics are enough for the reader to understand the problem and he states enough facts. It is sufficient information in order for the reader to relate.
- Appeals- Logical, Ethical & Emotional
- He definitely provides us with logical appeals, for example when he talks about marriages & why they fail at such a young age he told that according to the US Census Bureau, 2 out of 3 marriages under 30 years of age end in divorce. He states facts on how women used to be in the past and what role they used to play. They used to get married only to be a housewife, now women go to college, graduate and want to be independent.
- Ethical- I couldn't really find any real ethical appeals other than what society thinks of this.
- Emotional- He uses this one the most, because he states his opinion on mostly every part of the topic in order to make the reader wonder is this right? or wrong? For example, he says he would ask those couples who got married to contact him in 20 years to see if they re still together and he wouldn't be surprised if they ended up in a divorce.
